The famed Chain of Lakes in Northwest Michigan, although one continuous flow, is actually two clusters of lakes…the Upper chain and the Lower chain. The village of Bellaire is the dividing point between the two because of the dam that prevents boaters from going between the Upper and the Lower Chain.
The Lower Chain is a series of big lakes, big homes, big boats, and lots of activity, while the Upper Chain consists mainly of smaller lakes and cottages, and thus has much less activity i.e. they are quieter.
The lakes of the Upper Chain include Intermediate, which is the largest as well as being a bit more active, Hanley Lake, Benway Lake, Wilson Lake, Ellsworth Lake, St. Clair Lake, Six Mile Lake, and Scotts Lake.
This is cottage life from the past. Quiet, fun, family-focused, and affordable. The fishing and swimming are outstanding. The small towns of Bellaire, Central Lake, and Ellsworth, are classic Northern Michigan resort towns that look pretty much the same as they did in the 40's & 50's.Probably the biggest change has been the introduction of gourmet dining with the opening of regional world-class restaurants. Lulu's, The Blue Pelican, and The Rowe Inn, are all located on the Upper Chain.
So come North, come often, and invest in this magical land on these magical (and affordable) lakes.
