Exploring the Highland Lakes region is like driving from the present into the past and illustrates what cottage life was some half century ago. Very little vehicle traffic, no planes overhead, and virtually no development. There is one bar (the Hideaway), one party store with two gas pumps, and vast forests that are mostly state land. This area is truly a four-season playground unlike other lake areas in northern Michigan.
The lakes of this area include Starvation Lake, Manistee Lake, Big Blue and North Blue Lakes, Squaw Lake, Indian Lake, Big & Little Twin Lakes, Bear Lake, Log Lake, Lake Placid, Pickerel Lake, and several other smaller lakes.
This is also snowmobile country with hundreds of miles of groomed trails just outside of your front door. Out your back door, it is an easy walk to the fishing shanty for a very quiet day of contented angling…and don't forget a thermos of chili, a thermos of coffee, and a six pack. Summer further defines this area for those who enjoy four wheeling on the marked trails and quiet fishing from a small boat that's just perfect for little children as well as the big children. Spring and fall are quiet times of hiking, photography, mushrooming, and superb grouse, woodcock, and deer hunting.
You need to come here. You need to drive these back roads and see these lakes. You need to come here…and stay here.
There is no better time to find and buy a cabin or cottage here in the highland lakes. We know every inch of this country. We know these lakes and we know how to find and help you purchase your cabin or cottage "up north".
